In an unexpected foreshadowing perhaps of the impending Social Security crisis, this is a chilling, strange account of a Buenos Aires that has, without warning, violently turned on its elderly.

War’s narration gives it a much more immediate sense of urgency and tension than Invention’s oddly removed dairy entries, while maintaining Casares’ usual density of ideas.

It wasn’t all gloom and doom though, as the author also oa how the old folks stuck together, how some families hid their old people from the mob, etc. It takes places ceerdo the streets of Buenos Aires. Written almost a decade before the death squads disrupted Argentina, it is the gripping first-person narrative of an old man caught in a wave of persecutions against all old people, and might well stand as a metaphor for the murkier currents of Latin American society today.

My review will casres in English, though, because my ability to read and lz Spanish is better than my skill at actually using the language correctly for a longer text.
